Qualifying for a Hazard Mitigation Grant

FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program provides grants to states, local and tribal governments to implement long-term hazard mitigation measures following a major disaster declaration. Grant funds should be used to fund projects that will reduce or eliminate future disaster-related losses.

Mitigation of Potential Risks After a Disaster

The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (FEMA) funds are available to state, local and tribal governments and are designed to cover the costs of proactive measures that want to prevent or minimize damage in the event of a future disaster. For example, a government may apply for and receive funds to:

  • Acquire property and demolish or relocate buildings currently on a flood plain
  • Retrofit structures to minimize damages from high winds, earthquake, flood, wildfire, or other hazards
  • Build levees or flood walls to protect critical facilities such a water purification, sewage treatment, communication or electrical transmission facilities
  • Many other purposes
